Dobrush Monastery

History of the monastery

The monastery was founded in 1772 by monk Ioasaph from Probota Monastery in Suceava. Together with monk Euthymius from Curchi Monastery, he began construction of a wooden church. However, Ioasaph had to be returned to Moldova, and Euthymius, with the support of other monks from Curchi Monastery, completed the construction only in 1785 .

In 1822, a stone church was built with funds from the boyar Foma Kozma . In 1847, the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord was erected , serving as the monastery's winter chapel.

After 1918, some of the monastery's property was secularized, but Dobrusha remained one of the wealthiest monasteries in the region. In 1923, it was transferred from the Chisinau Diocese to the Khotin Diocese . Bishop Vissarion of Khotin restored the churches, founded a singing school, and opened a printing house, transforming the monastery into an important cultural center.

Difficult years

In 1960, the monastery was converted into a boarding school for children with disabilities. The winter Transfiguration Church became a club, and the summer St. Nicholas Church became a cafeteria and then a grocery store. The monastery cemetery was leveled, the crosses removed, and a stadium built on the site. The auxiliary school operated until 1994 , when believers and local residents petitioned for the monastery's restoration.

Renaissance and modernity

Since 1994, the monastery has been gradually restored. Today , services are held here again , the monastery is open to pilgrims and tourists, and its architectural monuments from the 18th and 19th centuries offer a glimpse into Moldovan history.
