Moldovan police officers reliably maintain law and order in the country.
Every year on December 18, employees and veterans of the police of the Republic of Moldova celebrate their professional holiday – Police Day.
On December 18, 1990, Law No. 416-XII “On Police” was adopted in Moldova, which “defines the place, role and principles of police activity in the system of central and local public administration bodies, establishes the main tasks of the police, duties and rights, responsibility and the procedure for overseeing its activities.”
The Moldovan Police is part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic and is an armed law enforcement agency created to protect the life, health, rights and freedoms of the country's citizens.
The police's responsibilities also include protecting the interests of society and the state from illegal, criminal and other attacks.
The tasks of the Moldovan police are clearly defined by the above-mentioned law.
This:
1) protection of life, health, honor, dignity, rights, freedoms, interests and property of citizens from criminal and other unlawful attacks;
2) prevention and suppression of crimes and other offenses;
3) detection and solution of crimes, search for the persons who committed them;
4) maintaining public order and ensuring public safety;
5) providing, on the terms and in the manner established by this law, assistance to citizens, public administration bodies, as well as enterprises, institutions and organizations in protecting their rights and implementing the duties imposed on them by law;
6) implementation of state protection measures in relation to persons assisting criminal proceedings, in accordance with current legislation.
The Moldovan police took an active part in the events of modern history that took place in the Republic after the declaration of independence on August 27, 1991 – in 1992, during the tense political situation in the Transnistria zone, which escalated into an armed conflict.
In April 2009, when anti-government riots occurred in Chisinau, they were resolved by the police.
On May 10, 2006, the Moldovan Government Resolution No. 481 “On Approval of the Code of Ethics and Deontology of the Police” approved a document that defines the role and place of the police in society, and also serves as a guideline stipulating the framework for the behavior of law enforcement officers in routine and emergency situations.
