The Voloden Gorge stretches above the Rakovets River valley, approximately 1.5 km from the La Castel tract. Here, the small Bogda River flows into the Rakovets, and the gorge itself begins at the confluence of these rivers. Thus, it is located between the gorges in La Castel and the gorges near the villages of Buzdujeni and Brynzeni, which we've already mentioned.
The gorge is relatively small and shallow—less than a kilometer long—and its slopes rise 60-65 meters above the Rakovets valley floor. The left slope at the entrance to the gorge is almost vertical and covered with dense, predominantly oak, forest.
The lower part of the slope is exposed, worn away by the river's waters. Here, Sarmatian limestone protrudes, and spring water seeps through it, feeding Rakovets. The right slope is dotted with numerous picturesque boulders and small shrubs, and at the entrance to the gorge, there is even a forest. The left slope of the gorge is approximately 5 meters higher than the right.
It should be noted that after its confluence with the Bogda River, the Rakovets River nearly doubles its flow rate, reaching a width of 7-10 meters in places. However, the river's depth never exceeds 1 meter. In the far part of the gorge, closer to its exit, the entire riverbed is strewn with large rock fragments falling from the slopes.
The right bank of the river is higher than the left, and a picturesque trail winds along it at the very foot of the rocky slope. It is from here that the view of the river and the left slope of the gorge is particularly impressive. Above the gorge, on both sides, lie unique and virtually untouched forests of sessile oak, stretching all the way to Volodeni-Bleșteni and Gordinești.
The gorge boasts a rich grass cover, with a multitude of river and meadow flowers growing both on the river valley floor and along the slopes. The gorge's natural environment is virtually untouched by humans, which cannot be said of the slopes of Rakovets and Bohda on the approach to the gorge. Here, we saw numerous small workings within the thick Toltra ridges, including the area of the La Castel tract. But we'll cover that in a separate report.
Thus, the Voloden Gorge is one of four similar natural monuments along the Rakovets River, and if we take into account three more gorges above the Draghiste River: Trinca, Fetești, Burlănești, then the result is a completely unique natural complex within the boundaries of one Edinet district.
The combination of impressive Toltra ridges, the highest of all the Prut mountains, protected forests, stunningly picturesque rivers, and rich, and in places unique, vegetation creates a natural landscape worthy of being designated a national park. Once you've visited, it's impossible not to return again and again.
This year, 2013, the annual Art Labyrinth summer festival will be held in the Voloden Gorge, and we wish it every success. We also sincerely hope that its implementation will not harm the natural environment of this area.
