The natural beauty of Edinet district is truly inexhaustible. In this brief essay, we will briefly describe two natural monuments near the villages of Trinca and Brânzeni. In both cases, these are gorges in the Toltra ridges. However, in one case, in Trinca, the Dragishte River flows along the bottom of the gorge, while in the Brânzeni Gorge, it is the Racovăt River.
The village of Trinca is located 10 km from the city of Edineț. This ancient Moldovan village is famous for the quarry near it, just beyond the Trinca Gorge, that produces the best lime in Moldova. It was also once renowned for being home to many masters of limestone sculpting ornaments and bas-reliefs, which is why literature often speaks of the uniqueness of Trinca houses, each distinct from the other thanks to the distinctive moldings that adorn them.
Right on the outskirts of the village, along the Dragishte River, lies the widest gorge in Moldova, between two toltra reefs, reaching 250 meters at its widest point. The gorge is approximately 1 kilometer long, with steep slopes reaching approximately 120-140 meters. The slopes of the gorge offer a magnificent view of the village, and on the opposite side, a limestone quarry and a site with numerous lime kilns. The top of one slope is flat, overgrown with dense perennial grasses and shrubs. Cows and goats can often be seen grazing here, and the outskirts of the village spread out just a short distance away, lending the entire place a special charm. The opposite slope of the gorge is a separate toltra massif, with a characteristic rounded-elongated shape (a similar one can be seen in the La Castel tract near the village of Gordinesti).
The Dragishte River, although no more than 10 meters wide, flows through the gorge through several rapids, creating a rather noticeable roar and can be heard from the very top of the gorge.
This place has long been a favorite among Moldovan tourists and is a true natural masterpiece. The Brânzeni Gorge, near the village of the same name, stretches along the bed of another river, the Racovăț, which flows through several other natural monuments in the same area: La Castel and the gorge near the village of Zabriceni, which we will cover in a separate article.
The Brynza Gorge is located some distance from the village. It is longer than the Trinka Gorge, but shallower, no more than 100 meters deep, and approximately 150 meters wide. It is more winding, giving it a particularly picturesque appearance. A large limestone quarry is located nearby.
The Racovăț River is also small and narrow, no more than 10 meters wide, but more winding. It also has rapids, but its main feature is the capriciousness of its riverbed, something we've already encountered in the La Castel ravine near Gordinești. Both slopes of the gorge are gentler and, beyond the gorge itself, blend in with the surrounding terrain, meaning this is a gorge formed by the erosion of rock by the river.
The gorge differs from the Trinka gorge in that it has less abundant vegetation on its peaks and slopes. However, it is amazingly beautiful, long remembered by all who have visited it, and is rightfully considered a natural monument.
