Near the town of Leova, there is a part of the structures called Trojan's ramparts.
These structures indicate the presence of the Romans in these places and are defensive structures in the form of earthen ramparts.
The Moldavian Trojan Walls are part of the grandiose structures of that time that stretch across Europe and are called Hadrian's Walls there.
On the territory of modern Moldova, the defensive structures of Trojan's ramparts have been preserved quite well.
Entire systems of ramparts were built across the territory of modern Europe at various times, but the exact dates and reasons for such massive construction remain a mystery. These structures are most clearly visible in Ukraine and Moldova.
Here they are known as Trojan's shafts or Serpent's shafts.
According to one version, its name comes from the name of the Roman emperor Trajan, who lived in the first century.
As history tells us, he waged numerous wars on the eastern borders of the Roman Empire, annexing new provinces, thereby strengthening the borders of old provinces in the territories of the modern states of Bulgaria, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Romania.
In Moldova, there are two distinct ramparts: the Upper and Lower Trojanov Ramparts. The Lower Trojanov Rampart is considered the oldest of these structures.
Built in the third century AD, this earthen rampart stretches for approximately 125 kilometers, originating from the Prut River in Moldova and extending to Lake Sasyk, located in modern-day Ukraine.
The Upper Trojan Wall is a stone defensive structure built much later. It is said that the Upper Trojan Wall was built not by Roman legionnaires, but by local residents. This structure was erected to separate two warring tribes.
The ramparts themselves are the remains of defensive structures, ranging in height from 3 to 6 meters. On them, we can see the remains of various fortifications, guard camps, and houses. Undoubtedly, at one time, this was an entire defensive structure, which astonishes archaeologists with its sheer length.
Tourists visiting Moldova are recommended to visit the Trojan Ramparts, as despite their age, they are in relatively good condition. They are definitely worth a visit.
