Located approximately 200 kilometers from Chisinau, near the village of Coban.
The village of Koban from historical documents, a location noted back in 1374, when the village was still called Zubreutsi.
Not far from the village begins what is probably one of the most impressive natural monuments in Moldova – the Prut Rapids.
They represent a chain of rapids; this formation is characteristic of the Upper Prut region and is a unique phenomenon in Europe.
Scientists have dubbed this natural monument a chain of coral reefs, while locals call it "ciglee." In scientific literature, it is referred to as "toltre," which translates from Polish as "Prut Rapids."
The Prut Rapids natural monument is concentrated in a limited area, in the basin of the small rivers Larga, Viliya, Lopatnik, Dragishte, Rakovets, Chukhur and Kamenka.
All rivers flow into the middle part of the Prut.
The length of the landmark is more than 200 kilometers.
Situated in the basin of the Prut tributaries, several kilometres from the left bank, they present a picturesque natural spectacle.
The coral reef chains in northern Moldova consist of the skeletons of corals, mollusks, shells, algae, marine animals and organisms that inhabited the Tortonian and Sarmatian tropical seas approximately 10 to 20 million years ago.
These truly unique Bessarabian reefs are similar in origin to the great coral chain of Australia.
But unlike Australia, where almost the entire chain is underwater, with only its peaks rising 2-5 meters above the water, the Moldovan reefs reach up to 100 meters in height and are located on land.
This makes it easier to explore them or simply admire their beauty.
The most interesting places near the Prut Rapids natural monument can be found approximately 3 kilometers from the Kamenka stream. Here, there is a reef split into two parts, which is called "At the Edge of the Rock" and "Big Rock."
In one of the caves, "Big Rock," there is a human dwelling that dates back to the Paleolithic and Mesolithic eras.
Fossilized remains of animals and stone tools were found here.
The reef also contains traces of a Neolithic fortress, protected by steep banks and an earthen embankment.
In all of Europe, from the Strait of Gibraltar to the Urals, you won't find places like Moldova. Here you can observe and explore these mysterious natural wonders.
