The village of Trinca is located 10 km from the city of Edineț. This old Moldovan village is famous for the quarry that produces the best lime in Moldova, located nearby, just beyond the Trinca Gorge.
Right on the outskirts of the village, along the Dragishte River, lies the widest gorge in Moldova, between two toltra reefs. At its widest point, it reaches 250 meters. The gorge is approximately 1 kilometer long, with steep slopes reaching approximately 120-140 meters.
From the slopes of the gorge there is a beautiful view of the village, and on the opposite side – of the limestone quarry and the site with numerous lime kilns.
The Dragishte River, although no more than 10 m wide, flows through the gorge, creating a rather noticeable roar and can be heard from the very top of the gorge.
Trinca lime is renowned throughout Moldova as the finest, a source of great pride for the villagers. However, the quarry that produced the lime ran dry and closed, and now limestone must be transported from quarries in Fetești and other remote locations. Worst of all, limestone has begun to be mined directly from the slopes of the protected Trinca Gorge, effectively destroying it.
This greatly upsets us, but we hope our publication will bring this situation to the attention of those responsible and help the gorge. We should also point out that, of the more than two dozen kilns, barely three or four are currently operational; the rest are abandoned, and many are already crumbling. It seems that this isn't simply a matter of a shortage of raw materials, but rather the fact that lime no longer plays such a significant role in construction, being replaced by new materials and technologies.
