The Prut River, 953 kilometers long, originates from a mountain source near Hoverla in the Ivano-Frankivsk region and flows into the Danube.
It flows through Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania. It is Moldova's second-largest river, forming the country's natural border with Romania.
In its upper reaches, the Prut is a typical mountain river, but in Moldova its valley widens considerably, the current becomes calm, and the banks are low.
The flora and fauna of the Prut in these areas remained virtually untouched thanks to the strict border controls that were in place in the river area.
Now it has been weakened a little, and tourists have the opportunity to admire its incredibly picturesque shores.
In the northern part of the country, there are picturesque gorges on the banks of the river; in the south, there is a wide river valley densely populated with birds and amphibians and large natural lakes; in this area, the Lower Prut Nature Reserve is located.
The Cahul, Hincesti, and Fălești districts boast picturesque, steep slopes cut by ravines along the banks of the Prut River. The Costesti Reservoir, with its seascapes reminiscent of the sea, is also noteworthy.
