Approximately 185 kilometers from Chisinau, in the floodplains of the Middle Prut, is the largest scientific reserve in Moldova, Padurea Domneasca.
Here, over a large area along the river, there is a picturesque forest, where mainly such plants as poplars, oaks, beeches, etc. grow.
In the Padurea Domneasca Nature Reserve, herons nest not in the reeds, but in the trees. Locals call this place "Starna Tsapeli" (Herons' Star), a true paradise for these birds, which are listed in the Red Book.

It is not so easy to find them in the wild now.
Their origin, thousands of burial mounds stretching in parallel rows along the left bank of the Prut, still remains a mystery.
Perhaps this is an ancient burial place of warriors who died in the numerous battles that took place in these parts?
Or maybe the mounds are coral deposits covered with earth?
Or maybe this is selective subsidence of the soil in the Prut floodplains?
For now, these are all just guesses, and every visitor has the right to offer their own version.
The administration of the Padurea Domneasca Scientific Reserve also recommends that tourists visit the surrounding Tovtra Mountains with their ancient caves, the largest lake in Moldova, Costesti-Stynca, several old rural settlements, and several wooden churches located within the reserve.
