It consists of hilly forests with maximum heights of up to 380 m, crossed by valleys, ravines, and gyrtops.
Nowadays, forests in Moldova have noticeably thinned out, being replaced by vineyards, apple orchards, and sunflower fields.
In the western part of the country, there is a well-preserved forest, in which the only scientific state forest reserve in Moldova, Codri, was created in 1971.
Almost the entire reserve is covered by forest. This colorful forest includes trees such as beech, birch, elm, spruce, and hornbeam. The reserve's fauna is diverse, and wild boar, deer, foxes, hares, badgers, and golden eagles can be found here.
The reserve has helped preserve endangered species. For example, martens are found only here in Moldova. The wildcat, listed on the IUCN Red List, can also be found here.
The reserve is designated as scientific and provides a high level of protection for the flora and fauna found within its territory.
According to the degree of scientific interest, the reserve can be divided into three zones: strictly protected, buffer and intermediate.
In the very center of the reserve, on an area of approximately 750 hectares, there is a zone of absolute peace, so to speak, a standard of wild nature.
There is no human intervention here, only careful observation. The reserve is home to approximately 90 rare plant species.
Plants such as cotton grass, toadstool, and marsh grass can be found in the forest. Shrubs and grasses are well developed, including dogwood, European spindle tree, viburnum, goutweed, and wild garlic.
