Plaiul Fagului translates as Beech Land. The name is no coincidence, as the reserve's vegetation contains over 680 species of vascular plants.
The reserve was created in 1992 on the basis of the Redenij Več hunting ground in the north-eastern part of the Codri Plateau.
A remarkable fact is that its territory is partially accessible for ecotourism, which means that tourists can see with their own eyes the full beauty of the Playul Fagului Nature Reserve.
The reserve has an area of more than 5,500 hectares, of which 5,375 hectares are forest.
The territory itself is very diverse, in some places there is even mountainous terrain, which is not typical for these places.
Steep slopes, deformed by ancient landslides, predominate.
The height of the slopes varies and ranges from 140 meters to more than 400 meters above sea level.
The Reden River, with a cascade of lakes, flows through the reserve and divides the reserve into two approximately equal areas.
The reserve's flora, as mentioned above, consists primarily of vascular plants and over 150 spongy plants, 48 lichens, and 68 mosses. It's worth noting that 27 plant species are listed in the Red Data Book of the Republic of Moldova.

The forest consists mainly of hornbeam, beech, oak, and less commonly holm oak.
In some places you can see majestic centuries-old oak trees.
Due to extensive deforestation in Codri, the stone hut has almost disappeared, and in its place, mainly hornbeam grows.
Currently, work is being carried out in the reserve to ecologically restore forest plantations without damaging the soil cover.

Speaking of the animal world, the Playul Fagului Nature Reserve is home to more than 211 species.
Among them are 142 species of birds, 49 species of mammals, 8 reptiles, 12 amphibians and more than 60 species of terrestrial invertebrates.
Here you can meet wild cats, pine martens, badgers, foxes, wild boars, roe deer, and recently red deer and common deer have become more common in the reserve, which is a very good sign, say scientists.
The Plaiul Fagului Nature Reserve is a very picturesque place, a true treasure of Moldovan nature!
