Reut is the largest inland river in Moldova, a right tributary of the Dniester.
This is one of the oldest rivers in the country, its age comparable to the Dniester and Prut – the Reut is already several million years old.
The length of the river is 286 km, the basin area is 7760 square km.
On average, the width of the riverbed does not exceed 30 m, while the width of the valley can reach up to 7 km.
The source of the river is located near the village of Redu Mare in the Donduseni district, on the Northern Moldavian plateau.
The first part of its journey the river makes almost vertically from north to south, then changes direction twice.
The river's picturesque valleys, and especially the limestone gorges and canyons it creates along its path, are a natural landmark of the country and attract many tourists who enjoy eco-tourism.
The most spectacular part of the Reut riverbed is considered to be the part that the river has been carving through the Toltra ridge for many millions of years near the rock formations of Old Orhei.
In the vicinity of the village of Trebujeni, a narrow riverbed meanders through limestone cliffs along its canyon-like bed, surrounded by picturesque Moldovan nature.
