Not far from the town of Costestești, to the east of the village of the same name, the Duruitoarea River, a tributary of the Chugur River, has cut a deep gorge in the Tovtra mountains.
Its steep limestone slopes are dotted with grottoes and adorned with numerous cliffs of the most unusual shapes.
The Duruitoarea Veche Grotto is known as an ancient settlement from the Stone Age.
It consists of three rooms with a total length of 49 m and a width of 5-9 m.
Archaeological excavations have uncovered Ice Age fossils and remains of an ancient culture, making it world famous.
The grotto in the Duruitoarea Gorge is carved out above the village at an altitude of 33 meters. Animal remains, tool fragments, and traces of prehistoric humans (250,000-300,000 years ago) were discovered in one of the caves.
Among the many objects found in the Duruitoarea Gorge are remains of bison, rhinoceros and red deer bones, bone and stone weapons, flint tools, amulets and ornaments, pins, pendants, spears, mammoth tusks and deer teeth.
The most spectacular are the limestone cliffs and caves of varying sizes, making this valley and the Duruitoarea Gorge an ideal place for relaxation.
Even though the Duruitoarea Gorge Nature Reserve is one of the earliest settlements in our region, it now has a corresponding status for various creatures, especially birds, that nest here, preserving the peace of the area and the harmony between man and nature!
It must be said that the nature, the topography of these places and the wealth of historical and archaeological monuments are amazing.
And if we take into account that the Padurea Domneasca Nature Reserve is located just 12-15 km away in the Glodeni district, this area is a very attractive place for organizing investments in tourist facilities.
