The village of Cobani in the Glodeni district is located east of the district capital, Glodeni, 17 km away and 204 km from Chisinau. Officially, the village is considered to have been founded in 1702, but it should be noted that its founders moved here from another village, Zubreuți, later renamed Vasileții de Jos.

This village was founded in 1374. The relocation was due to the fact that the old village was located too close to the Prut River and was constantly flooded. As a result, the villagers founded a new one 2 km further from the Prut River, on the right bank of the Kamenka River, at the foot of a toltra cliff known as Bolshaya Skala.

The Bolshaya Skala (Big Rock) toltra reef is the southernmost of the reefs in Moldova, stretching from the northeastern corner of the country southwest to the coast of the Prut River. It is in the Prut-side regions of Briceni, Rîșcani, Edineț, and Glodeni that the majority of Moldova's unique toltra reefs are located, giving the entire northern region its distinctive and inimitable appearance.

The Toltra Ridge near the village of Koban consists of three parts, of which the one directly above the village and the Kamenka River valley is known as the Bolshaya Skala (Big Rock). Unfortunately, part of it was blasted and subsequently exploited industrially for valuable limestone mining. It was only in 1988, through the efforts of village residents and environmentalists, that all industrial activity in this protected area was halted. The Bolshaya Skala itself, approximately 1 kilometer long, is a continuation of the Toltra Ridge, which extends for several kilometers along the Kamenka River and is in places broken into several parts by the meandering river.

These are very picturesque places, especially considering that from the right bank of the Kamenka River to the Prut River stretches a stunningly beautiful lowland, in places flooded and covered with numerous reed beds, lakes, and pools where numerous birds feed and nest. Here we saw herons, storks, swans, wild ducks, and other birds.

The Bolshaya Skala toltra massif itself is the tallest of the others in this range, reaching a height of approximately 70-80 meters. The cliff is dotted with numerous caves, which, according to village residents, have existed here since ancient times. It is also known that numerous excavations have been conducted in and around these cliffs, uncovering traces of rare and now-extinct animal and bird species, as well as artifacts of the Cucuteni-Trypillian culture.

The second part of the Toltra ridge is located some distance from the village of Koban and is bordered on three sides by the Kamenka River, creating a truly unique landscape, reminiscent of a medieval fortress surrounded by moats. The floodplain of the river is overgrown with reeds, which adds further charm to the landscape.

But the views from the top of Toltra Rock are especially impressive. The green-silver plain, flat to the horizon, the tall pyramidal poplars lining the roads, the grazing herds, the squares of fields, and the scattered fragments of Toltra Rock are truly captivating.

It's worth mentioning that in the Glodeni district, there's another famous toltra ridge near the village of Buteshti, also stretching along the Kamenka River. This two-kilometer-long reef is also a natural monument, and we'll be sure to tell you about it.
