Hirjeuca Monastery

Hîrjeuca Monastery is located approximately 70 kilometers northwest of Chisinau , in the picturesque Codrii region, surrounded by forests, lakes, and green hills. It is one of the most interesting and atmospheric places in Moldova , where history, spirituality, and nature harmoniously blend.

History of the monastery

The monastic community arose in 1740 , when the first wooden churches and monastic cells were built on this site. The monastery's heyday came in the mid-18th century : at that time, it was a well-maintained complex with a park, lakes, fountains, and picturesque alleys.

In 1836, the summer church "Ascension of the Lord" was built , its architectural style reminiscent of the Chisinau Cathedral . Later, the winter church "Saint Spyridon" was built , which is also open to visitors today.

At one time, the monastery housed a rich library and also had a parish school , which makes it not only a religious but also a cultural center.

With the advent of Soviet rule, the monastery was closed, and a sanatorium was established on its grounds . However, since 1993, Hîrjeuca Monastery has been revived and once again functions, preserving the atmosphere of its spiritual and historical heritage.

Nature and attractions

The monastery is located in a unique natural area where tourists can enjoy:

  • A picturesque forest , which is a botanical monument;

  • Lakes and fountains surrounded by well-kept alleys;

  • The fountain of youth , which is believed to have healing properties;
