Hincu Monastery

Hîncu Monastery is one of the most visited monasteries in Moldova, founded over 300 years ago. It is located in the picturesque Codrii forests , approximately 40 km west of Chisinau, on the banks of the Cogîlnic River. This place combines rich history, spirituality, and natural beauty , attracting tourists from across the country and abroad.

History of the monastery

The history of Hîncu Monastery, like many ancient monasteries in Moldova, is shrouded in legends and mysteries. According to one, in the late 17th century, Moldova was frequently subjected to Tatar raids.

The future founder of the monastery, Mihalcea Hîncu , lived with his daughter Ileana near Lăpuşna. When the enemy advanced and the odds were stacked against them, father and daughter decided to flee. Along the way, they found a river to their rescue and stopped on its banks to rest.

On this day, Mihalcea vowed that if he survived, he would build a church on this spot. God favored Hîncu, and in 1678, a deed of land was used to establish a skete . One of the first servants of the monastery was his daughter, who took the monastic name Paraskeva .

Since then, the monastery has survived many trials, preserving its rich history and spiritual heritage, which is now accessible to tourists and pilgrims.
