Spiritual revival in the heart of Moldova

The St. Nicholas Convent, also known as the Chistoleni Monastery , is located just 6 km from the village of Sadaclia (Basarabeasca district) and 90 km from Chisinau . Today, the monastery attracts not only pilgrims but also tourists interested in the history, architecture, and scenic beauty of southern Moldova.

History of the monastery

According to official documents, the monastery was founded in 1932 by Metropolitan Gurie Grosu (1926–1936) on the estate of Vasile Pistol, a native of Sadaclia, who donated 50 hectares of land to the Metropolis for a spiritual monastery. Historical sources also refer to the monastery as the Gurie Metropolitan Monastery .

However, already in 1942 , during World War II, the nuns were forced to abandon the monastery and move to Varzaresti. The monastery grounds were then used as a prison for prisoners of war .

Since 1950, the monastery buildings have been used for civilian purposes: initially, they housed a hospital, but after its closure, the premises were transferred to a local agricultural enterprise. During this period, the monastery was almost completely destroyed—farms were built from the remains of the buildings, and almost no traces of the old monastery remain.

In the spring of 1997, the convent was completely revived . Today, it is a functioning spiritual monastery, where monastic life continues and pilgrims are received.
