In 1991, the Prutul de Jos Nature Reserve was created, the main goal of which is to protect the flora and fauna of Lake Beleu and the Prut River floodplain in its vicinity.
The area of the Prutul de Jos Nature Reserve is over 1,690 hectares, 2/3 of which are made up of the waters of Lake Beleu.
The Prutul de Jos Nature Reserve, recently included in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Network, is one of the main attractions in this area, and more and more tourists are drawn to this magnificent place with its unique rural traditions, which offer an unforgettable tourist experience.
The remaining territory is the floodplain of the Prut River.
The territory of the reserve serves as a natural ecological laboratory.
The reserve includes land, swamps, water surfaces, and also a picturesque area of steep floodplain terraces.
The highlight of the Prutul de Jos Nature Reserve is, of course, Lake Beleu itself, a relict lake. The lake is up to 5 kilometers long and up to 2 kilometers wide. The lake is shallow, with a maximum depth of 2 meters.
Lake Beleu has been preserved since time immemorial, dating back over 6,000 years. It was formed when most of the Danube Delta was under the Black Sea.
Today, water enters Lake Beleu through two channels and flows out of it through a third channel, it’s that simple.
The water level in the lake varies depending on the time of year; during spring and summer floods and floods of the Danube and Prut rivers, it can rise significantly.
Aquatic vegetation thrives in the lake's waters, represented in these areas primarily by reeds, cattails, pondweed, hornwort, white water lilies, salvinia, and hornwort. All this beauty can be seen only in favorable years for the lake; in dry years, the vast majority of the aquatic vegetation dries up.
Speaking of trees, you can find willow groves here, and white poplar is rare.
There are also animals here; you can encounter otters and European minks.
More than 160 species of birds have also been recorded in the Prutul de Jos Nature Reserve.
Lake Beleu is also home to more than 30 species of fish.
It's fair to say that the Prutul de Jos Nature Reserve is rich and teeming with flora and fauna, and this is primarily due to its location. It's relatively close to the Danube Delta and conveniently lies along a major bird migration route. So, it was inevitable that a nature reserve would emerge here.
Today, the reserve has enormous conservation value, and this should be kept in mind when visiting. So be attentive and considerate, because we only have one nature, and we must preserve it carefully.
