The Kitskany Bridgehead (Kopansky Bridgehead) was a strategic bridgehead of Soviet troops on the western bank of the Dniester River, in the area of the village of Kitskany (10 km south of Tiraspol), captured by troops of the 3rd Ukrainian Front (General of the Army R. Ya. Malinovsky) during the Odessa Operation of 1944.
Capturing a bridgehead
On April 14, 1944, troops of the 37th Army (Lieutenant General M.N. Sharokhin) crossed the Dniester.
The bridgehead had a frontal size of up to 18 kilometers, a depth of 6-10 kilometers, and an area of about 150 km².
Battles for the bridgehead
The battle to hold the bridgehead lasted more than four months. Soviet troops lost 1,480 soldiers, buried in the village of Kitskany, and approximately 1,700 in mass graves in the village of Kopanka.
The importance of the bridgehead
The Kitskany bridgehead was well equipped in terms of engineering, which made it possible to place in its limited space by the beginning of the Jassy-Kishinev offensive operation (August 20-29, 1944):

51st Artillery Regiment
up to 30 special parts
From the Kitskan bridgehead, the troops of the 3rd Ukrainian Front (from May 1944 - General of the Army F. I. Tolbukhin) launched the main attack on the enemy.
