The Arame couple from the village of Palanca in the Stefan Voda district converted their family home, which is located in the very center of the village on the banks of the Dniester, into a small hotel, “Casa Veche.”
Our parents' house was abandoned, in disrepair, and we thought we had no history, no past. So we decided to renovate it, preserve it, so the children would come back. They grew up here, with their grandmother.
The restoration work on the house lasted almost two years.
"This is the oldest house remaining in the village. I think it's over 100 years old. Tourists will enjoy a lot: wine, preserves, pickles, feta cheese, sausages—everything we produce here," noted Zakharia Arame.
The governments of Sweden and the United Kingdom provided financial support to the boarding house owners. Therefore, the boarding house's first guests were high-ranking officials from these countries. They participated in master classes, rode bicycles through the village, and even danced a hora.
"This boarding house is proof that Moldovan villages have preserved their traditions. You have a unique culture. We support the efforts of entrepreneurs. They have the potential to develop the tourism industry," said Swedish Ambassador to Moldova Anna Liberg.
"We're investing in people. These economic programs contribute to the development of communities. And this is part of the ongoing development of tourism in Moldova," said USAID Moldova Mission Director Scott Hocklander.
Currently, the guesthouse offers bike tours of the village and nearby wineries. The Arames intend to expand their range of services in the future.
"We're developing a recreation area for fishermen on the banks of the Dniester. There will be a culinary route. We want to update local recipes. There will be master classes for those interested. Tastings at nearby wineries," said Tatyana Arame, owner of the guesthouse.
A tourist and walking route from here to the Dniester. Boat trips. Even a trip to Odessa.
