Kishtelnitsa Monastery

The St. Michael's Monastery is located near the village of Kishtelniţa , just 90 km from Chisinau . This ancient village was first mentioned in documents in 1698 under the name Hoimăneşti , meaning "marshy place with many springs." Today, Kishtelniţa attracts tourists and pilgrims with its rich history and picturesque natural surroundings.

History of the monastery

The monastery's main shrine is the Church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel , built in 1856 on the grounds of a village cemetery. The church's stone walls are half a meter thick, and a small square narthex is crowned by a bell tower.

During the Soviet period, the church was closed and abandoned, but in 1992, an Orthodox school for singers opened at the church . In 1994, a monastery was officially established. After the old church was renovated , a new church dedicated to the Holy Great Martyr Panteleimon was built nearby . It is connected to the nave of the Church of the Holy Archangels, allowing entry to the new church through the old one.

Architecture and decoration

The new church is square , without a nave or pronaos, and the interior walls are decorated with icons. The Church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel is painted in the realistic Russian style typical of Orthodox churches of the 18th and 19th centuries.

After the school of singers moved to new premises , the abbot's quarters and cells for monks were arranged in the old church , and the parish house was renovated and used as a refectory .
